The Importance of Pet Dental Care

Much like humans, your pet also benefits from proper dental care. Our veterinarian will check your pet's teeth as part of a routine pet exam. At Callahan Drive Animal Hospital, our Knoxville TN veterinarian and staff develop a personal relationship with you and your pets. We are a full-service practice that provides routine care as well as emergency services. We are here to help your animal with all their dental needs.

Pet Dental Care

Pets can suffer from different types of dental issues. Depending on the type and breed of pet you have, some are more prone to developing problems with their teeth than others. You may notice that your dog or cat has bad breath. Often, this is caused by some sort of periodontal disease. Diseases of the gums can also lead to heart disease in both cats and dogs.

For Dogs

Dogs can suffer from broken teeth, and they can also develop tartar on their teeth, leading to periodontal disease. Once the disease advances, it can cause teeth to fall out, severe pain, and even bone erosion. Providing dental care for your dog is essential. Teeth cleanings and annual veterinary exams are the best way to make sure your dog has proper dental health.

For Cats

Cats are likely to develop gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums usually caused by a build-up of plaque. The best treatment is to make sure the plaque doesn't build up. This requires brushing your cat's teeth. When gingivitis is left untreated, it often leads to periodontitis, which can cause bad breath, painful chewing, and a general decline in your cat's health. At your cat's next wellness exam, we can assess whether your pet may benefit from a dental cleaning.
