Microchipping FAQs
When you adopt a pet, it is up to you to make sure that they are safe and secure. One great way to do this is to have your pet microchipped. This is a service provided by the professionals at Callahan Drive Animal Hospital.
What Is Microchipping?
When your pet is microchipped, the vet will implant a tiny microchip under their skin between the shoulder blades. The chip will contain a number that coincides with a number in the national database. The information in the database will contain your pet's name, your contact information, and any medical conditions your pet has. If your pet is found, the microchip can be scanned at an animal hospital or a shelter so you can be contacted.
Is Microchipping Painful?
No. When the veterinarian implants the microchip, they will do so with a syringe. The procedure is no more painful than your pet's annual vaccinations.
How Long Does the Microchip Last?
Microchips don't have batteries or require any kind of power. Your pet’s microchip will last throughout his or her entire life. If you move or your contact information changes, you must update your information in the database.
What Are the Benefits Of Microchipping?
A microchip ensures your pet can be returned under any circumstances. Microchipping can also be helpful if your pet is stolen or if ownership is in question. While we still recommend you have your dog wear tags with your contact information, these can fall off and become lost.
